he beauty industry is, for the most part, a self-regulated industry with little to no 3rd party regulation when it comes to the various chemicals and synthetic ingredients used.
This lack of regulation has given rise to an increasing number of issues across the sector, including consumer health and safety concerns. As a consumer, it is so important to take the time and read and understand the ingredients found in the products you use day in and day out….
Just because a product is sold on a store shelf, doesn’t mean its healthy or even safe! Unfortunately, the skincare industry is virtually unregulated, which means many companies add various chemicals, synthetic preservatives and other harmful ingredients to their products to help maximize their shelf life and profit margins.
For example: Most skin care products are packaged in plastic and formulated with water as the main ingredient. Plastic is used, because it is a less expensive alternative to glass and lighter in weight, so less expensive to ship. The concern with plastic is that it not only is much less environmentally friendly, but plastic is composed of various chemicals that leach over time into the product itself. Water is added to cosmetic products, because it helps to fill a package in the least expensive manner. The main concern when water is added is that it dramatically reduces a products natural stability and shelf life, so synthetic and chemical based preservatives are needed to ensure a long lasting product.
The good news is, by being aware as a consumer and seeking products that are certified organic and chemical free, you can make healthier decisions for you and for your family. Plus, as an added benefit using real ingredients, that are naturally full of vitamins, minerals and enzymes means your skin will get the nutrients it needs to look its best and feel great!
Take the time to look for organic certifications and review the ingredient lists of the products you purchase! Just because a product states that it’s “vegan” or “natural” doesn’t mean it is actually free from harmful additives and fillers.
